INTERMOT in Cologne is normally a high point of the year when it comes to new bike launches but 2018’s event has proved surprisingly low-key with relatively little in the way of surprises or jaw-dropping new models.
While that bodes well for the next big show – EICMA in Milan this November – it means there are still plenty of blanks in next year’s model ranges.
But Intermot wasn’t completely free of new machines; here are our top 10.
10: Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory
You won’t instantly see the changes to Aprilia’s craziest naked bike, but it makes the list because the key update – Ohlins electronic semi-active suspension – is one that should make a big difference. The Tuono Factory has long been a highlight of the super-naked class and it’s packed with technology, but if there’s been a criticism in the past it’s that there’s been little to set it apart from the cheaper Tuono V4 1100 RR. The electronic Ohlins kit solves that issue, giving a clear reason to opt for the Factory version if your wallet allows.
9: KTM 1290 Super Duke GT
Does anyone really need 175hp from a touring bike? Of course not. But since when has need come into it? We don’t need ice cream either, but there are still queues at the soft-serve van. So the fact that KTM has upped the power of the Super Duke GT to that level by giving it the same engine spec as the insane Super Duke R is like a Flake in the Mr Whippy. If you’re going to indulge, you might as well go all-out. Electronic semi-active suspension is another 2019 update, thanks to KTM’s WP subsidiary, along with facelift.
