To join the ‘re-beasted’ 1290 Super Duke R, KTM has released two new EURO 5 compliant motorcycles at EICMA - the KTM 390 Adventure and 890 Duke R.
The 390 Adventure has the exact same single-cylinder 373.2cc 4-stroke motor that’s housed in the 390 Duke. And is the A2-licence legal little sibling of the 790 Adventure.
2020 KTM 390 Adventure facts
The 373.2cc motor is kicking out 43bhp (32kW) @ 9,000rpm and 27lb-ft (37Nm) @ 7,000 rpm, same as before, and it has a cable-operated slip/assist clutch.
The frame remains the KTM patented steel trellis [like that on the Duke], but the Adventure is now equipt with WP’s APEX fully-adjustable fork, and APEX shock (each with 170mm and 177mm of travel retrospectively).
A four-piston radially-mounted ByBre caliper on a 320mm disc deals with the braking up front. Sadly, no spoked wheels on this bad boy, but wheels are cast aluminium, with a 19” at the front, and 17” at the rear - better for light off-roading.
The KTM 390 Adventure weighs roughly 158kg dry. Fully wet, we’d expect it to weigh around 170kg+ depending on loadout.

2020 KTM 890 Duke R Facts
Based on the 790 Duke DNA, the 890 produces more power, more torque, and less harmful emissions from its parallel twin motor. And it has ‘racier’ rider ergonomics. Fitting, considering it’s nicknamed the ‘Super Scalpel’...
It makes a fairly potent 119bhp (89kW) @ 9,250 and 73lb-ft (99Nm) @ 7,750rpm. That’s a 16hp and 9lb-ft gain compared to the 790. Its peak power is produced slightly later in the rev range, but it does have more immediate torque.
Blingy new radially-mounted Brembo Stylema four-pot calipers biting a pair of 320mm discs produce the stopping power - cornering ABS is standard. The 890 is equipt with cornering traction control too, which is enabled by the Bosch 9.1 MP IMU-equipped braking controller. The rear caliper is a single pot, still working on a 240mm disc.
The KTM 890 Duke R has lost some pounds too, as dry weight is down by 3kg to 166kg dry. Fully wet, this figure would be more like 190kg.
The suspension remains the same as before, with KTM opting for the trusty 43mm WP APEX fork and WP APEX shock.
