IT is well-documented that Michael Schumacher was a big fan of going fast on two wheels and, before his 2013 skiing accident, the German F1 ace rode everything from Harley-Davidsons to mopeds and everything in between.
He got so into the world of two wheels, that he even had a stint in the IDM Superbike Championship in Germany riding a Ducati. It is his time on a Ducati that will probably be the most memorable, when ‘Schumi’ was invited to ride the Italian brand’s MotoGP machine at both the fabled Mugello circuit in Italy and the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain (where, incidentally, Valentino Rossi had his second F1 test for Ferrari, reportedly lapping within 0.7 seconds of Schumacher’s best time).
Two of the lids used for that particular test ride are going under the hammer, as part of the Full Throttle - The Schumacher Collection via Sotheby’s. The two lids are Schuberth items, which were Schumacher’s favoured brand in later years. He had a lot to do with the company and could be seen regularly testing its products on both two and four wheels.
The two helmets are instantly recognisable, and decorated in his trademark colours, with the German flag adorning the flanks and the rear, and the seven stars marking each of his F1 World Drivers’ Championships on the top. Both seem to be pretty much identical, although there is a significant difference in the price - one is sitting on $7,000 and the other on just $500.
Alongside the two Ducati MotoGP helmets are two other helmets used later in his career when he was riding in the IDM while on a hiatus from Formula One.
