Fabio Di Giannantonio is the final piece in the 2024 MotoGP puzzle, as the 25-year-old makes a dream move into Valentino Rossi’s Mooney VR46 Racing Team.
The future for Diggia was seemingly hanging in the balance for the final quarter of the season, and the potential of losing his place in MotoGP was starting to seem inevitable. That was until a late upturn in form for the #49, who chose to use the last five rounds of the championship to put himself well and truly in the shop window for 2024. His fate though for next season would not be with the Gresini Racing Team he’d represented for the last two seasons, as it had already signed up a certain Marc Marquez who was looking to move on after a torrid few years in the Repsol Honda Team. That really only left Di Giannantonio with options in Mooney VR46, or the CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team - although the latter’s place in the championship has since been declined by MotoGP organisers.
Di Giannantonio crowned his 2023 season with a stunning win at the Qatar MotoGP round, a race in which he passed and gapped Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia to take an emotional first Grand Prix victory. He further signed off in style with an inspired ride to the podium in the final round at Valencia, only to have the result stripped from him due to a tyre pressure infringement.
Speaking about the switch to Mooney VR46, Fabio Di Giannantonio said:
"I’m happy to join such a strong Team as the Mooney VR46 Racing Team, I can learn a lot and I can’t wait to start working together on this project, we can do really good things. In the last two seasons in MotoGP, I have grown a lot and in this team I will certainly be able to mature further and achieve great results. I’m excited, I can’t wait to meet all my new staff and crew and start working on the track. Thanks to everyone who made this possible."
Diggia will now get his first taste of the Mooney VR46 bike tomorrow (Tuesday 28th November), as the teams and riders get to grips with the machines at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Spain.
